Discover Astoria Kabob House

Tucked away at 12949 Olive Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63141, Astoria Kabob House feels like one of those hidden gems you only discover when a friend insists you have to try it. Walking in, the aroma alone is enough to tell you this isn’t just another Mediterranean spot-it’s a place where every skewer, every plate, carries a story of craft and care. The interior blends casual comfort with subtle elegance, inviting both lunch-hour regulars and dinner date diners to linger a little longer.

The first time I visited, I ordered the chicken and lamb combo platter, and that was the moment I knew I’d found my go-to spot in St. Louis. The kabobs were perfectly charred yet juicy, paired with fragrant basmati rice and a side of freshly baked pita that almost melts in your hand. It reminded me of the kind of home-cooked meal you’d get from a family that values flavor over flash. Later, I learned that their marinades are prepared in-house daily, using traditional Middle Eastern spices sourced from trusted local suppliers-a small detail that makes all the difference.

What stands out most about this restaurant isn’t just the food but the consistency. Over the past year, I’ve visited multiple times, and every dish-from the falafel appetizer to the beef shawarma wrap-has been spot on. According to a 2024 report from the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top factors influencing customer loyalty, and Astoria Kabob House nails it effortlessly. Their team clearly understands that dining isn’t only about taste; it’s about trust built through repetition.

A chat with one of the staff members revealed that their chef trained in traditional Persian and Turkish cooking methods before settling in St. Louis. This mix of cultural expertise shows up in the details: the balance of spices, the tenderness of the meat, and even how the sauces are layered for depth rather than overpowering heat. There’s an artistry in restraint-something only an experienced chef can pull off.

The menu isn’t overwhelming, which I appreciate. It’s focused-grilled kabobs, gyro platters, hummus, and salads done right. Each item feels curated rather than mass-produced. For vegetarians, the grilled veggie platter is a solid option, featuring zucchini, eggplant, and bell peppers tossed in olive oil and garlic, all grilled to smoky perfection. My dining companion, a self-proclaimed hummus snob, swears their hummus is among the best in the city-smooth, slightly tangy, with a generous drizzle of olive oil.

On weekends, the diner buzzes with families and groups of friends sharing platters and stories. Reviews online reflect the same sentiment, with most customers praising the authentic flavors, attentive service, and reasonable prices. Platforms like Yelp and Google Maps show consistently high ratings, and many diners mention that Astoria Kabob House reminds them of meals they’ve had abroad in countries like Lebanon, Greece, or Iran.

From an operational perspective, the restaurant maintains a clean and inviting environment. Health inspection data available from local government records shows no major violations-a testament to their commitment to hygiene and food safety. In a city full of dining options, that level of reliability adds another layer of confidence for first-time visitors.

Professionally speaking, what makes this place special is how it bridges authenticity and accessibility. It delivers complex, region-specific flavors in a setting that feels local and welcoming rather than exclusive or intimidating. That’s a balance many restaurants try to achieve but few sustain over time.

In short, Astoria Kabob House at 12949 Olive Blvd isn’t just a stop for Mediterranean food-it’s a genuine culinary experience rooted in tradition, care, and consistency. Whether you’re grabbing takeout after work or planning a leisurely dinner with friends, you’ll find that every bite feels intentional, grounded in real expertise, and served with quiet pride.

  • I didn’t know what to expect when I came here. However I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is very clean and has a European feel. The food was incredible try the Solyanka and Golubtzy. I did not have a bad item here.

  • We had a great dinner here. The space is classic and beautiful. We were a large group and tried many dishes. To a person, everyone was happy with their food. The borscht and solyanka soups were warm and comforting. The pelmeni were so good. The main dishes like beef stroganoff, chicken Kiev, and cabbage rolls tasted like they were special family meals prepared just for us. The two young ladies serving us were kind and attentive. We were made to feel welcome and were treated with wonderful food.

  • I ended up going to this establishment with a dining group of men period. We had about 20 people in our group who each had separate checks, which they kept very well organized. The food was very delicious and had a wide selection. It was white tablecloths and the servers were very professional and courteous inefficient period. The prices were a little expensive. But for the amount of food you got it was actually a good value. This place had a very unique interior that you would expect from a eastern european restaurant. It was actually kind of interesting to sit there and watch t v with the captions being in russian. For a different experience, I would definitely try this place like I said.Very nice people courteous and made you feel at home.

  • Great food and service! Starting with the food, having tried several parts of my and my souse's dishes, I mist say it was the best I have had in a very long time, and I am a picky eater by biological necessity. I have an allergy to onions (and just like blue cheese, I love the taste of them /sigh). The server understood and helped me find the perfect dinner - Chicken Kiev, with a side of Pan-Fried Potatoes. The chicken was seasoned and breaded to perfection, with the outside crispy while the center was tender and juicy! The potatoes? Rivaled only by my mom's and grandma's! The salmon and sea bass was excellent, but, alas, I was not able to sample the Beef Stroganoff and Seafood Salad due to the onions. I will say that they smelled divine and heavenly! The only down side? I was driving and unable to try any alcohol. The service was excellent, as well, with constant checking if we needed anything. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, yet almost formal; very nice. Definitely returning next time I am in town!

  • I went to Astoria Kabob House with my family and loved it. We got borscht, pickled vegetables, pierogi, golubtsi, and chicken Kiev. Everything was delicious. I also loved the kvas. In addition to the food, the service was excellent. I chatted with our waitress from Kharkiv who was very kind in helping me with my Russian. I had a great time and will definitely have to come back.

  • Let me say this place is on point. Fast service, delicious food, friendly wait staff, nice atmosphere and fully staffed bar. We went during the week, but they do have traditional live music on the wknds. Get the Borsch and Pelmeni. Chicken Kiev was awesome with potatoes.
